The Linguisticator

The Linguisticator - Free Download

Summary: The Linguisticator is a tool which will help to improve the readability of your writing, improve the quality of your writing, and reduce weak or complicated writing - all with a single click, and now available completely free (previously sold for £15).

First of all - I make no apologies for the appalling name!

The Linguisticator was the result of my own wish to locate a tool which would help to analyse my writing. I had a look about online, and made enquiries in various forums, but it seemed that there was really no single tool which would carry out everything I needed.

I did find tools which would do one or two useful things, but what I needed was a single, useful tool to analyze my writing effectively, accurately, and quickly.

Many of these partial tools were for sale for $20-$30, which didn't seem to me to be value for money. So I set about creating my own writing analysis tool.

The Linguisticator is a writing analysis tool, written by a professional writer.

What Does It Do?

The Linguisticator carries out a number of tests on your writing, providing a wealth of valuable feedback. This includes:

  • Word frequency
  • Ability to calculate word frequency, ignoring specific categories, including pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions and articles
  • Summary of top ten most used words
  • Adverb identification & frequency
  • General statistics, including number of words, paragraphs, average words per sentence etc.
  • Flesh Reading Ease score
  • Flesh-Kincaid Level

All of these tools combine to provide tremendously useful feedback to a writer, in one single utility, rather than having to use several separate tools, in addition to a calculator, and pot luck.

How Does This Help My Writing?

By using the Linguisticator, you will be able to improve the quality and readability of your writing in a number of ways:

  • The word frequency tool scans your entire document, and provides you with a simple to use display of all the words you have used, in order of the frequency with which they occur. Use this tool to spot those words you don't realise you use a great deal, and add more variety to your vocabulary.
  • Although there are other word frequency tools out there, they all have one major weakness - they don't allow you to filter the results. Why is this useful? If you have ever used such a tool before you'll have noticed that the most frequently used words include 'I', 'and', 'of' and such like. The Linguisticator allows you to filter the results, ignoring pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions or articles - or all of them. This means that the results you see are much more meaningful and useful to a writer.
  • Any good writer will agree that one sign of weak writing is the use of adverbs, (mostly those words that end in -ly.) The Linguisticator will identify all of the adverbs in your writing, inform you how many times you use each one, and give you an overall score for your use of adverbs. This allows you to reduce, or eliminate these awful words, and improve the quality of your writing.
  • The Flesch Readability test is a globally recognized way of assessing how easy writing is to read. This is marked as a percentage, and good writing will aim to score over 60%, with professional writers looking at scoring over 70%. Unfortunately the formula to calculate this score is very complicated. The Linguisticator will calculate and display this score accurately and quickly.
  • The Flesch-Kincaid Grade is another way of identifying how readable your writing is. The score awarded indicates how many years of schooling someone would be expected to have in order to be able to read and understand your text. For example, a score of 8 would indicate that a Grade 8 student would understand it, whereas a score of 12 would be university standard. This allows you to adapt your writing to your audience more effectively.

What Makes This Different From Other Tools?

The Linguisticator is significantly different from other writing analysis tools available. Firstly, it has been written by a full-time professional writer, and I use this myself extensively.

Other advantages which make this software stand out from others include:

  • Five tools in one. Other tools available can do one or two of these functions, for the price of $30, but the Linguisticator represents a complete solution, presenting all of the feedback, analysis and grading in one screen - for half the price.
  • Unlike other word frequency tools which simply display all of the words you have used in order of frequency, the Linguisticator allows the option to filter out common words such as pronouns, prepositions, articles and conjunctions, providing a far more accurate and valuable analysis of your individual writing style and vocabulary.
  • Accurately identify all adverbs, allowing you to eliminate these awful words and improve your writing style. The trouble with other tools available is that they simply scan for all words ending in -ly. But anyone with a knowledge of English would realise that there are many words ending in ly that are not adverbs, meaning that such tools are terribly inaccurate. In fact, there are over 160 words ending in -ly which are not adverbs (such as fly, likely, daily, etc.) and the Linguisticator knows this, and so will only display adverbs ending in -ly, and not any other word. This provides a much more accurate and useful way of taking your writing to the next level.
  • The Flesh Readability Score and the Flesh-Kincaid Grade are recognized ways of analysing the readability of your writing, and will often be required by companies who employ writers professionally. Knowing these scores will allow you to understand how easy your writing is to read. The trouble is that many tools offer a very inaccurate score. This is not only because the formula is very complicated, but because it relies on accurately counting syllables amongst many other things. The Linguisticator is able to analyse your writing to a very high standard of accuracy, providing an industry-recognized standard of writing analysis.

How Much Does It Cost?

The Linguisticator is now available FREE. Previously this version used to be sold at £15, but we have now decided to make this software available to anyone completely free. Simply download, install and enjoy.
